Paul M. Tschirhart

Member

Paul M. Tschirhart is a Member in the firm of Margulies Wind, P.A. He has had a long and distinguished career as a litigator and counselor in government, corporate, and law firm positions. Although he has handled legal matters across a very broad spectrum, Mr. Tschirhart has had significant experience in the general areas related to travel and transportation as well as employment law. He has tried cases and argued appeals throughout the country including before the Supreme Courts of California, Illinois, and Iowa, U.S. Courts of Appeals for the District of Columbia Circuit, the Fourth, Sixth, Seventh, and Eighth Circuits, as well as the U.S. Court of Claims and numerous Federal District Courts.

He is currently admitted to practice in New Jersey including the Federal District Court for the Northern District.

Mr. Tschirhart began his practice with the Federal Maritime Commission in Washington, DC in 1968. Thereafter, he was an associate in two small maritime law firms before joining the Civil Division of the Washington, DC United States Attorney’s Office in 1973, wherein he represented the United States Government in a variety of civil litigations. He joined the Justice Department as a senior trial attorney in 1976 and worked on several matters before the Special Railroad Reorganization Court, representing the government’s interests in the reorganization of six bankrupt railroads into what is now Conrail.

Mr. Tschirhart joined United Airlines in 1977 as a senior trial attorney and tried cases in various courts throughout the country. He was promoted to senior counsel in 1982 and became responsible for antitrust and regulatory matters for the airline. In 1986, Mr. Tschirhart became the Senior Vice President and General Counsel for The Hertz Corporation, which brought him and his family to New Jersey. In that position, he counseled the company through several ownership changes, litigations, regulatory matters, and legislative issues, becoming an experienced advocate before the United States Congress and several state legislatures.

Mr. Tschirhart left The Hertz Corporation in 1998 and became a partner in Sher & Blackwell LLP, leaving that firm in 2010 to join Margulies Wind.

Mr. Tschirhart graduated from the University of Notre Dame in 1963 and Wayne State University Law School in 1968. He is married and is the father of three adult children and has two grandsons. Mr. Tschirhart served on active duty in the U.S. Navy between 1963 and 1965 and thereafter remained in the U.S. Navy Reserve until retirement as a Captain in 1986.

He is on the Board of Covenant House New Jersey and is an active parishioner of St. Pius X Church in Old Tappan. He enjoys reading, singing, biking, skiing, and college sports, especially at his alma mater.
